Comedian Sunda Croonquist is being sued by her Mother-in-law after one of her jokes backfired.

This jokester is known for putting a hilarious spin on her diverse background for laughs. She has an African-American mother, her father’s Swedish, her husband’s an attorney, and she was raised Roman Catholic.

Normally she can throw all of those elements into the mix to craft some very witty material, which has even landed her on Comedy Central. But there’s one individual in her personal life throwing rotten tomatoes up on stage: her Jewish mother-in-law.

Before you assume that the comedian is racist toward Jewish people, consider this; Sunda Croonquist converted to Judaism when she married her husband, and the two maintain a kosher household.

Ruth Zaffrin has filed a lawsuit claiming Sunda Croonquist has spread “false, defamatory and racist lies.” Aside from the alleged defamation, Zaffrin claims that her identity was revealed after personal information was posted on the comedian’s website.

This mother-in-lawsuit would have the information removed from the website, and provide a cash settlement for her alleged “pain and suffering.” So far, Croonquist has stated that she’ll gladly adjust the routine to leave out the mother-in-law jokes, and take down the things written about her on the website, but she has indicated that paying monetary damages for the jokes is taking it too far.

One of the bits in question is a comedic retelling of when Sunda met Ruth, and includes a racist punchline:

“Oh, my God, Neil, look at her; she’s got light eyes and light hair; what kind of black person is she?”

In another routine, Sunda says: “I’m a black woman with a Jewish mother-in-law, you know the only thing we have in common is we don’t want to get our hair wet!”
