Ludacris’ Giveaway
Ludacris showed his generosity when he gave away 20 cars to people in need.
It all began when Ludacris announced on the radio and via Twitter that for those who were in need but otherwise could pay for the registration, taxes, license plates and insurance should write a 300-word essay explaining why they were deserving of the car and submit it via the Web site of his charity, The Ludacris Foundation, of which his mother, Roberta Shields is president. Regarding the car giveaway, she said:
”Our major focus is youth and supporting the family structure. This year we want to do something to help youth and families manage during these tough economic times. Having a vehicle to get back and forth to work and daycare can make the difference in getting and keeping a job.”
According to CNN, the foundation received nearly 4,000 essays from those hopeful to be recipients in Ludacris’ giveaway. He along with his mother and the foundation’s staff read through the submissions and placed calls to verify information and interview potential recipients.
The winning essay was from a refugee from Sudan, Mading Duor, who had faced a myriad of hardships including escaping civil war in his native country and the death of one of his children who was hit by a car. Karen McCrea, a church member wrote the essay on his behalf. Ludacris told CNN about his long talk with the man.
“That’s one of those stories that really had me like, man, I thought I had faced some adversities in life,” the rapper said in a quiet moment away from the crowd. “But I’ve not faced adversities at all compared to what he’s been through. I cannot imagine going through what he’s gone through and still be that strong.”
As seen in the photos of the rapper with some of the car recipients and in the video, Ludacris’ giveaway took place on Sunday at the official event, the “Stars for Cars -- The LudaDay Giveaway” at the Nissan South in Morrow, Georgia.
